The evolution of Ludwig hardware is a detailed and multi-faceted story. For this reason and the aforementioned trend of updating vintage drums, hardware will not be covered in this guide. Date stamps are simultaneously the best and worst means to properly date a Ludwig drum from the ’60s use of the date stamp was discontinued ca. A drum was stamped when the shell was finished, providing the most accurate depiction of the age of wood due to the fact final assembly came later.
The difficulty in date stamps is, more often than not, that the stamp has been rendered illegible or removed completely due to the wear and tear of the years.

OK people, we need to be a bit more imaginative. I mean, if you have the bucks and money is no object, by all means just go for the high-end stuff. But if you are like me, and the bank account is limited, then a little effort is required. Yeah, I wish I could buy every Gladstone drum that came along like I did when no one knew what they were or who he was well, practically no one.
But with the escalating prices of vintage drums, I have to be more creative. Personally, I am in rapt ecstasy over the current price trend of vintage drums. I genuinely surprised and amused when I see vintage drum collectors whine and cry sometimes belligerently over these price trends. DUDE, your collection is going up in value.

This is a completely original WFL symphonic model snare drum in gorgeous black diamond pearl. This is a closet find, it is completely original, right down to the calf skin heads and snare wires. Even the original calf skin strap is attached to the butt side of the snare wire set.
The kick drum is s i believe. maybe , the date inside the drum is a bit smeared. I’m considering now selling the kick, rack tom, and snare to get 60s.
The use of tube lugs would remain unchanged until , when Ludwig now owned by G. Considered by many to be the most elegant lug ever designed, the Imperial tension casing incorporated a beautiful and majestic art deco design. Like the original Slingerland Streamline lug, it too had the threads tapped directly into the metal casing and suffered from the same thread design flaw as the Slingerland Streamline lug from that era.
The Imperial lugs were not incorporated into bass drum design until around This unbelievably rare snare drum is an engraved Deluxe version of the Silver Anniversary model. Some of the shells , oh yeah, were gorgeous! Some of them are not what you think. You were given fair warning. I described my experience acquiring such a drum kit in these pages. The look was interesting, granted, but the metal was soft and prone to crack; the shells were porous second-grade Asian softer-woods, overly flexible, and often untrue or out-of-round.
They had no value as trade-ups to prestigious brands they emulated: Slingerland, Gretsch, and occasionally Rogers. Truth be told, for the most part, those stencil brand kits were dodgy and, if not outright junk, they rarely peaked the VU meters. There were, perhaps, such stencil brands emanating from the Pearl and Hoshino later Tama factories in the sixties. Today, my research suggests strongly that I limit myself to a discussion of Pearl s shells, specifically the good that resides alongside the bad and the ugly.
The good we never would have imagined possible. I know I certainly missed the point all these years. All I know is what I heard…when playing these budget kits in moments of weakness. Sometimes the tone defied preconceptions, repeat sometimes. I was paying attention, or so I thought!
